Stopera is a chamber opera company based in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. Stopera creates a vibrant and exciting range of opera and music theatre productions, festival events and concerts. The company’s diverse repertoire of full length and one-act operas includes eight Australian premieres, and extends from the Baroque delights of Handel to the cabaret idiom of Kurt Weill. Since its foundation in 1995, Stopera productions and artists have received nine Canberra Critics Circle Awards, including 2005 Canberra Times Artist of the Year award for the company’s Artistic Director, Vivienne Winther.
One of the most adventurous and stylish independent opera companies in the country.
Chris Boyd The Australian Financial Review 2005
Stopera ventures where larger companies generally dare not go. There are always risks in doing the unexpected and Stopera embraces them willingly.
Deborah Jones Arts Editor The Australian 1999
