Christopher Steele
TENOR

Christopher Steele is based in Lancaster, England and has performed extensively in opera, oratorio and concert throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and in the US. He has been acclaimed in reviews for his fine, clear voice, excellent diction and strong stage presence.

Christopher was born in England and grew up in Canberra. While completing a BSc at ANU, Christopher took voice lessons as a scholarship student at the Canberra School of Music, sang with The Resonants, and performed the role of Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore for the Canberra Philharmonic Society.

After completing his science degree, he became a chorus member of the Victorian State Opera and Opera Australia. He won a full scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London to study in their opera course, and then undertook further study at the National Opera Studio. In that time he sang in master-classes with such noted artists as Dennis O'Neill, Philip Langridge, Robert Tear, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Ryland Davies, Sir Thomas Allen and Sarah Walker.

His operatic roles include Rodolfo La Bohème, Nadir Pearl Fishers, Tamino Die Zauberflote, Ramiro La Cenerentola, Hoffman Tales of Hoffman, Lensky Eugene Onegin, Almaviva Barbiere di Siviglia, Ottavio Don Giovanni, Prologue/Quint Turn of the Screw, Male Chorus Rape of Lucrezia, Tom Rake’s Progress, Lurcanio Ariodante, Brighella Ariadne auf Naxos.

Christopher has performed for a number of UK and European opera companies and houses including British Youth Opera, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, Royal Opera House, Opera Zuid, Opéra Nomade and OperaTtheatre Company Dublin.

Oratorio highlights include: The Messiah in Festival Hall and Bridgewater Hall, and with Brian Kay in Halle, Germany; The Creation in the Royal Albert Hall with Sir David Willcocks; Mozart Coronation Mass in Prague; Bach St John Passion with Schreier, Vaughan Williams On Wenlock Edge for the International Vaughan Williams Conference; Finzi Dies Natalis with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

Recent and forthcoming engagements include; Liverotto in Lucrezia Borgia for Buxton Festival; Verdi Requiem for Glossop Choral Society; Elijah for Mansfield Choral Society; Luis in the world premiere of Letters of Love Betrayed for ROH2 and Music Theatre Wales; and tours of the US and Scandinavia as tenor soloist in Mitch Sebastien's spectacular, The Opera Show.
