Paul Cambridge
BARITONE

English-born bass-baritone Paul Cambridge studied piano and trumpet throughout his childhood before being chosen to sing the bass solo of Vivaldi's Gloria for a School performance. This turned his focus to singing, which he pursued seriously after leaving school. Paul has since then studied with distant relative, former international and Australian Opera principal soprano, Dolores Cambridge, receiving his Associate Diploma of Music Performance, Singing, and leading to his enrollment in the A.N.U. Bachelor of Music course in 2007 where he now also works with Opera Australia principal bass and fellow Stopera artist, Stephen Bennett.

Paul has sung with many companies throughout N.S.W. and the A.C.T., including Rockdale Opera (Australia's oldest opera company), Savoy Arts Co., The Australian Italian Opera Co., The Haydn Bande and Stopera, appearing in some of Australia's greatest venues including Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, Goulburn's Cathedral Church of Saint Saviour, and even Junee's organic licorice factory!

Paul's operatic repertoire includes the roles of Sparafucile and Ceprano in Verdi's "Rigoletto", Colas in Mozart's "Bastien and Bastienne", Almaviva in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", Sarastro and the Speaker in Mozart's "Die Zauberflöte", Balthazar in Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors", Caiaphas in Lloyd-Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar", and the unforgettable Count Formaggio in Michael Green's "Il Fornicazione".

Paul has also become something of a Gilbert and Sullivan specialist, having delighted audiences in the roles of The Sergeant of Police (The Pirates of Penzance), Pooh-Bah and Pish Tush (The Mikado), Private Willis (Iolanthe), Arac (Princess Ida), The Usher (Trial By Jury), Roderick (Ruddigore), Major Murgatroyd (Patience) and Captain Sir Edward Corcoran K.C.B. (Utopia Ltd.).

Another of Paul's great passions is oratorio. His extensive repertoire includes performances of the bass solos in Handel's "Messiah", Haydn's "Nelson Mass", Stainer's "Crucifixion", and the world premiere of Paul Paviour's "Woman, Thy Name is Woman".

Paul has been nominated for two C.A.T. awards and has won many prestigious singing prizes including the Macdonald's City of Sydney Performing Arts Challenge Oratorio and all the major operatic awards from Penrith City Eisteddfod, Macarthur Performing Arts Society and the City of Shoalhaven Eisteddfod.
