Tom won the Bass Championship and Bass Solo at the 2002 Queensland Heritage Eisteddfod, and was state finalist in the 5MBS Radio Young Performing Artist of the Year Award in 2005. For the State Opera of South Australia he has appeared in minor roles, as a regular chorus member, and as baritone cover artist in La Bohème, La Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci, Dead Man Walking, Gotterdammerung, and The Mikado. In productions for the State Opera of South Australia Studio, his major roles include Presto in Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tirésias, Peter the Father in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Le Podestat in Bizet’s Dr Miracle, Dr Gregg in Moore’s Gallantry, and Le Fauteuil in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortileges.
Tom’s musical theatre credits include Fred & Petrucchio in the Adelaide Festival Center’s production of Kiss Me Kate, Bill Sykes in Oliver, Count Carl Magnus in A Little Night Music, and Dr Daly and the Foreman for the Adelaide Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s productions of The Sorcerer & Trial by Jury. He also played Jules in the award-winning State Opera Studio production of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. In Brisbane Tom performed principal roles in the Savoyard Theatre Company’s productions of Guys & Dolls and Les Misérables. His operetta highlight so far was covering Poo-Bah opposite Anthony Warlow’s Ko-Ko in the Opera Australia production of The Mikado, directed by Stuart Maunder.
Tom is a Chartered Professional Engineer and continues to work full time as a Flight Lieutenant for the Royal Australian Air Force. He held the position of Principal Vocalist and Officer in Command of the Royal Australian Air Force’s Amberley Brass Band in 2001/2002. He is presently studying his PhD at Sydney University in psycho-acoustics and physiological modeling of the operatic singing voice and has published academic papers and delivered seminars on singer's formant production and perception within Australia and overseas.
